A startup online store based in Tucson now is offering mercury-free, energy-efficient home and business lighting products. Health and environmental advocate Mike Adams recently launched EcoLEDs.com to replace typical incandescent light bulbs and compact fluorescent lights. The light-emitting diode, or LED, lights do not contain mercury and produce little waste heat, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The bulbs work best as directional lights or spotlights and cost between $40 and $100, depending on wattage. The bulbs pay for themselves within two years when compared to incandescent bulbs, Adams said in a statement. "LED lighting represents a revolution in energy-efficient lighting for homes, businesses, schools and retail establishments," said Adams. "America can no longer afford to waste its costly energy resources on inefficient, wasteful technology like incandescent light bulbs. It is time to invest in a green future, and our LED lights offer a real solution, available right now, that consumers, businesses and government offices can leverage today to substantially reduce their CO2 emissions." The bulbs operate at 90 percent efficiency, well more than the standard 5 to 10 percent of a incandescent bulb, the company said. The savings related to wasted also dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emission. According to the company, the bulbs last approximately 50,000 hours or more than 10 years.
